The 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic – Jonathan Slappey
The 2011 NCAA mens basketball season will tip off in stellar fashion this year as the Michigan State Spartans take on the North Carolina Tar Heels aboard the flight deck of the United States Navy Aircraft Carrier the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego, California.
Quicken Loans announced their sponsorship of the inaugural 2011 Carrier Classic from a press conference at the New York Athletic Club in New York City on September 15th. Quicken Loans will partner with Morale Entertainment, Michigan State University, University of North Carolina and The United States Navy to produce this unprecedented event televised via ESPN at 7:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. PT) on Veterans Day, November 11, 2011.
As many as 7,000 spectators and military personnel will watch this epic ACC vs. Big 10 rivalry from the USS Carl Vinson, docked at Naval Base Coronado in the San Diego Harbor.
While Detroit Venture Partner Earvin Magic Johnson (’79 NCAA Champion Michigan State) and Charlotte Bobcat’s owner Michael Jordan (’82 NCAA Champion North Carolina) won’t be lacing their iconic sneakers up for the 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic, they will be on hand to act as honorary co-captains for their alma maters. But there are a number of NBA hopefuls to watch during this game. Players to watch in this rematch of the 2009 NCAA Championship game include:
Dramond Green (#23) – Michigan State – 6’7”, 235 Forward (Senior)
Dramond has a unique skill set for a collegiate center that will most likely play forward in the NBA. He has ball handling ability and shooting accuracy rarely seen by a player his size. The (former) NBA player his game resembles the most is Charles Barkley.
John Henson (#31) – North Carolina – 6’11”, 210 Forward (Junior)
Henson is a long lanky shot blocker with exceptional foot quickness. His finesse and ambidextrous post up game allows him to utilize the jump hook to finish with the right and left hand around the basket. Henson’s size, youth (20 years old), and skill set make him an intriguing NBA prospect.
Henson’s game wont be the only intriguing aspect of the 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic. Quicken Loans is sponsoring this event as a way to honor our veterans and troops on Veterans Day. Quicken Loans has enhanced the financial situations of nearly 15,000 active and retired military clients in 2011 by providing assistance in the refinancing or purchasing of their homes.
Through the VA loan option, Quicken Loans shows its appreciation for active and retired military clients throughout the year.
This year, help celebrate Veterans day by thanking a member of the military for their courageous commitment to fight for the freedoms we enjoy each day and also tune in to ESPN to watch this historic event which honors our Veterans.
