James Worthy Replaces Michael Jordan as UNC Honorary Captain

James Worthy - 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier ClassicUniversity of North Carolina coach Roy Williams announced on October 7 that James Worthy will take the place of his UNC teammate, Michael Jordan, as the honorary captain for the Tar Heels as they take on the Spartans of MSU on Veterans Day.  Although many novice sports fans remember (freshman) Michael Jordan sinking the game winning shot against Georgetown in the 1982 NCAA championship game, many fans don’t remember that (junior) James Worthy lead the team scoring 28 points and 4 rebounds. Other awards earned by Worthy in that championship year of 1982 at UNC include:

  • NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player
  • Consensus NCAA All-American First Team
  • College co-Player of the Year 1982

Worthy will join Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson (MSU’s honorary captain) on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson to participate in halftime activities for the thousands of armed forces members expected to attend. Magic and Worthy were teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers for 9 seasons (1982-1991). However, these two players have tons of achievements in common. Some of the more notable similarities include:

  • Both Magic and Worthy are 6 feet 9 inches tall
  • Both were the number 1 selection in the NBA Draft by the Lakers
  • Both players won a NCAA Championship in college
  • Both Magic and Worthy won NCAA Most Outstanding Player
  • Magic and Worthy were both on several NBA All Star Teams
  • Worthy and Magic both played their entire career with the Lakers
  • Both Magic and Worthy’s jersey numbers are retired in the Staples Center
  • Both Worthy and Magic were named to the 50th Anniversary All-Time Team

Thus, before you overload the inbox of the Bobcats PR manager with complaints that Jordan should be at the inaugural 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic, realize that the guy who is taking Jordan’s place as honorary captain is even more an accomplished NCAA player than Michael Jordan.
